Merrimack College is a private, co-educational college located in North Andover, which is a town in Essex County, in the US state of Massachusetts, with a population estimated at a number of more than 27 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census.
Merrimack College was founded by the Order of St. Augustine O.S.A. The Augustinians, in 1947, to serve the needs of G.I.'s returning home from World War II. It has an enrollment estimated at a number of 2000 students, from more than 25 states and 17 countries, and currently offers over 30 major and minor programs of study, in various areas, including new programs in criminology, biotechnology, sport management, and an honors program.
According to US News and World Report, Merrimack is one of the nation's top regional liberal arts colleges, the institution being consistently ranked high for more than a decade, by various other significant publications, including The Princeton Review, which recently named Merrimack one of 218 Institutions in its ''Best in the Northeast'' section.
Merrimack's athletic teams are known as the Warriors, who compete in 16 varsity sports, in NCAA Division II, except men's ice hockey, in which they compete in NCAA Division I, in the highly competitive Hockey East conference. Among the college's most notable athletic achievements, there is the 1978 men's hockey team Division II national championship, and the 1994 women's softball team Division II national championship.
The distinctive colors of the Warriors are navy blue, gold and white.
